Default Blair Witch 3

Talk of a second sequel to The Blair Witch Project comes in cycles. First it's rumored to be a period piece, then a direct follow-up and so on and so on...but nothing ever comes to fruition. The clucking has been renewed and rather than fan the flames, the fellas at Dread Central put their relationship with Daniel Myrick (co-creator of the film) to good use and requested some truth.

Is a sequel on the way? Myrick says he's been brainstorming an idea with partner Ed Sanchez. That's about it.

Over at the BBC News he says, "Ideally, each Blair Witch film would be a completely different kind of movie. We've thought about doing a film that takes place in the late 1700s and looks like a [Stanley] Kubrick movie with gritty looking people and lighting. But now, we're thinking about going back and and seeing what happened directly after the first film finished. I think it will have some kind of video element in it, but it won't be a first person hand-held movie."

Myrick and Sanchez have respectively been at work on their own projects since The Blair Witch Project struck in 1999. Myrick recently helmed and Sanchez has on the way. It'll be released on DVD by Ghost House Underground and Lionsgate on October 6.

Default Blair Witch 3

Are we edging closer to a Blair Witch 3? Possibly.

In an interview with The Star, original Blair Witch co-writer and co-director Eduardo Sanchez revealed that he has prepped a pitch for a third entry with Daniel Myrick. The next step is to bring it to rights holders Lionsgate.

And as he says, they could squash the idea. However, if they accept the story it would ask for the original's stars to return, albeit for smaller roles. And, as previously reported, their story would ignore the second film.

Does the world need a third Blair Witch? What do you think?

, one of the moviemaking masterminds behind smash hit The , has been talking about his proposed sequel Blair Witch 3.

Sanchez and co-writer/director had previously shied away from continuing the story, and turned down the chance to shoot previous sequel .

Now their tune has changed, with Sanchez telling that they are keen to re-acquaint themselves with the witch, planning a film that would pick up where the original left off and ignore the existence of the previous, critically panned sequel.

According to Sanchez, the pair recently road-tripped through Blair Witch haunts for inspiration, and have written a treatment that includes small roles for original cast members , and .

"We're at the step where we're about to pitch to Lionsgate, which owns the movie rights now" Sanchez told The Star. "It's pretty much up to them. They can completely squash it or greenlight it."

Sanchez also revealed that the film would rely less on characters speaking directly to the camera, and more on what he calls "mixed first-person", a moviemaking innovation that he hopes to experiment with on Possessed, another low-budget horror feature.

, the director of the original , has spoken about his desire to return to the series.

"We've been toying around with a sequel idea that we really like," said Sanchez. "It's just a matter of getting our schedules in line and having Lionsgate sign off on the idea. We've been ready to do a 'Blair Witch' movie for a long time. We're as close as we've ever been to making it happen but it's still not a guaranteed thing."

Speaking to , Sanchez also said that the mooted sequel would not use the now all-too-familiar "found footage" form. "Right now, the idea has no first person in it at all, but we'll see," he explained. "There's always room for new ideas to come in."

Curiously, Sanchez also spoke about the possibility of the original cast – Heather Donahue, Joshua Leonard and Michael C. Williams – returning for a sequel. "The plan is to have them [back]," he said. "They're probably not going to be the main characters but they're definitely characters in the sequel."

The Blair Witch project took near to $250 at the global box-office in 1999, while its comparatively big-budget sequel flopped.
