Well to me, a good hip hop song consists of a dope message firstly, that's why my fav artist is Saigon

Than a dope beat, something that's not typical of what the industry is putting out

I feel like a lot of songs sound the same now... so all i ask is for an artist to surprise me

Lyricism is key for a good song. A phat beat is nice, but not necessary. The beats on Illmatic don't strike me as incredibly complex, but that album is still classic.
